3 Steps to Emergency Preparedness

September 01, 2021

September is National Preparedness Month! There are a lot of things that we all need to prepare for, big and small. When it comes to healthfulness, being prepared for a multitude of emergencies is one of the best ways to protect our health (both physical and mental) in ‘what if’ situations. Wildfires, hurricanes and the like will not stop for us, or for a pandemic. The CDC recommends three steps to lay the groundwork for emergency preparedness.

Take Action: Organize different kits for different situations. These can be first aid kits, go bags, sanitation travel kits, or emergency food.

Plan Ahead: Designate places of safety. Where will your family meet up outdoors in the event of a house fire? Where will you go if you need to leave your home ahead of a natural disaster?

Create Community: Whether recovering from an injury or coming home to find a tree fell on your home during a storm, having resources to get things done is an important step for preparing.  Have a friend, but don’t be afraid to be a friend to other members of your community when they need help, too.
